The war on large pores: How to beat them in 3 simple skincare steps

February 14, 2024

How to minimize pores may be one of the most searched queries of skincare, which is also not entirely surprising. Enlarged pores are a skin concern for many but not everyone knows exactly how this happens or how the appearance of these visible pores can be minimized.

Pores are tiny hair follicles that exist in our skin (and there’s millions of them!). There’s so many skincare myths and facts about how to treat enlarged pores, but let’s stick to skincare facts. Blocked pores can be large due to being clogged with dirt and oil, while genetics also play a part in pores being large. This can also happen with any skin type, but may be more common with those of an oily skin type. The good news is using products with the right ingredients is the most effective way for how to reduce their appearance.

Skincare routine and products for minimizing appearance of pores

Excess sebum, dead skin cells, slow collagen production, dirt and debris and sun damage are believed to be some of the causes of visible skin pores. You’re probably wondering, “How do I treat my large pores then?” Below are some skincare facts for pore tightening success.

Step 1, Cleanser: Wash your face daily with a cleanser that contains AHAs and/or BHAs that exfoliate the skin, and cleanse away dirt and oils that clog pores. Follow up with a toner for acne to really ensure that your pores are clear.

Step 2, Face masks and peels: Clay face masks and exfoliating peels are a powerful way to deep cleanse impurities and exfoliate dead skin cells. This type of exfoliation can be less abrasive on the skin rather than physical exfoliation. We recommend using a mask 2 to 3 times a week to extract impurities from within the pores to visibly minimize their appearance.

Step 3, Targeted treatments: Rapid-acting pore correctors that instantly fill and blur can help fade large pores—but not all offer long-term results. Look for a pore corrector that features collagen-strengthening ingredients to help re-tighten the pore wall.

Step 4, SPF: Sunscreen is one of the most important products for healthy skin—especially when it comes to enlarged pore size. Aside from all the amazing benefits of SPF, there are still sunscreens out there that can irritate and clog pores. Look for an oil-free, lightweight, SPF moisturizer that helps keep skin matte and helps visibly reduce the appearance of pores.
