Here&#8217;s what they&#8217;re saying about facts vs. fictions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"numbered-list\">\n  <div class=\"numbered-list__items\">\n              <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">01<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\">Supplements don\u2019t survive the digestive track<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\">False<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\">Harland Adkins, a registered dietitian<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\"> and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\">nutritionist says, \u201cEssentially all vitamin absorption happens in the small intestine. However,\u202fabsorption depends on the quality of the product and the combination of nutrients that are taken together.\u201d If you\u2019re curious about which vitamins play well together (and which don\u2019t), speak to your physician<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW180467024 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW180467024 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">02<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\">You&#8217;ll always get enough nutrients if you just eat right<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">False. Miranda Hammer, registered dietitian, natural foods chef and founder of crunchyradish.com says, \u201cSupplements are intended to enhance the nutrient density of a diet, not replace\u202fit.\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Adkins agrees: \u201cSupplements are to humans what fertilizer is to plants. Give a plant an adequate amount of sunlight and water, and it will survive. Add some nutrient-rich fertilizer and the plant will thrive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Supplements can also fill in the gaps when food comes up nutritionally short. \u201cA variety of things can happen during the growing, harvesting, storage and preparing of food that can affect its nutritional content,\u201d Adkins says. \u201cProcesses that expose foods to high levels of heat, light or oxygen cause the greatest nutrient loss.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nutrient deficiencies also stem from alcohol consumption, allergies, infections, air pollutants and stress. \u201cSupplements not only protect against deficiency but also bridge the gap between average nutrition and optimum nutrition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">03<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\">Pregnant and nursing women shouldn\u2019t take supplements<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">False. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW27708848 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">But needless to say, definitely clear <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">your supplement regimen <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">with your OBGYN first.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\"> Hammer says, \u201cCertain\u202fnutrients are very important for pregnant women such as folic acid, DHA, iron and calcium.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">Adkins recommends taking immune-boosting supplements while breastfeeding, as they \u201ccan provide health benefits to both mom and baby. At a minimum, you should take a postnatal multivitamin or a product that includes the necessary nutrients for breastfeeding.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27708848 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW27708848 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">04<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\">The health of hair, nails or skin is 100% genetics\u2014supplements will never help<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\">False.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\">Hammer says, \u201cCollagen, sea buckthorn and omega-3 fatty acids can add additional boost to your hair, skin and nails.\u201d Adkins adds that supplements that may positively affect hair, skin and nail health<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\"> include <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\">antioxidants like <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW113794577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW113794577 BCX0\">vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, or Coenzyme Q10, biotin, a B-complex vitamin.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW113794577 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">05<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\"> Supplements cannot cure diseases or ailments<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">True. Because supplements are NOT drugs, they cannot claim to cure or eliminate diseases or ailments (think along the lines of fixing male potency, shrinking tumors, etc.). If they do, they may be \u201claced with illegal and potentially harmful substances, so consumers should beware,\u201d Adkins warns. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cDietary supplements <\/span>are <span data-contrast=\"none\">regulated by the FDA as food, not drugs.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The FDA enforces comprehensive regulations called the &#8220;Current Good Manufacturing Practices,&#8221; for those who manufacture, package or hold dietary supplement products. These regulations focus on practices that ensure the identity, purity, quality, strength and composition of dietary supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n                <div class=\"numbered-list__item\">\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-number label label--lg rotate-270\">06<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-title headline headline--lg\">It&#8217;s impossible to prove that supplements work<\/div>\n        <div class=\"numbered-list__item-text text\"><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">False.
