I started collecting plants four years ago when my roommate and I would go to plant shops for fun. We got super into it\u2014learning about the species, using trial and error to find out which ones worked for us. It quickly became an obsession and next thing I knew, my home and studio started resembling leaf-filled jungles. Now,\u202fI can\u2019t imagine my life without them. They’ve taught me everything from escaping to clearing the air. Here\u2019s why I love living that plant life, plus some advice for how to start a collection of your own. <\/p>\n\n\n
Plants are the gift that keep giving! Even though I initially used them\u00a0<\/span>as a way to<\/span>\u00a0fill and decorate my space, I\u2019ve since discovered that they\u2019re also great for\u00a0<\/span>my<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>wellbeing<\/span><\/span><\/a>. They have air-purifying\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/span>benefit<\/span><\/span>s, which\u00a0<\/span>balance<\/span>\u00a0out the clay fumes in my studio and\u00a0<\/span>bring<\/span>\u00a0a grounded, earthy feel to\u00a0<\/span>the space<\/span>. Plus, green is my favorite color, and I find being surrounded by all the different shades of it is an instant mood booster.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n My plants act as metaphors for my life. I recently moved back to Milwaukee, Wisconsin from Columbus, Ohio and brought\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0my plants. They can be picky about their environments (just like us!) so after the move, my fiddl<\/span>e-leaf\u00a0<\/span>fig\u00a0<\/span>tree\u00a0<\/span>dropped a lot of leaves and\u00a0<\/span>looked<\/span>\u00a0depressed. But now, after a short adjustment period,\u202fit\u2019s thriving\u2014which really feels\u00a0<\/span>just like<\/span>\u00a0my own transition back to Milwaukee. Seeing my\u00a0<\/span>fidd<\/span>le leaf\u00a0<\/span>going through that change served as a reminder that sometimes in order to bloom, you have to go <\/span>through some growing pains.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n Whenever I need\u00a0<\/span>break<\/span>\u00a0from work, I gravitate towards my plants. I get to step away for a minute and focus on the plant instead of\u00a0<\/span>work\u00a0<\/span>to s<\/span>ee how much they\u2019ve grown and water them\u2014it\u2019s an escape for me. I know being in nature is <\/span><\/span>proven<\/span><\/span><\/a> to help reduce anxiety and stress levels, and on those <\/span>days<\/span>\u00a0I can\u2019t get out of the studio, my plants provide the same effect.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n Plants are fascinating, with\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0their abstract lines and curves. The various leaf shapes challenge\u00a0<\/span>me<\/span>\u00a0to rethink everyday objects, like plates. They also indirectly inspire my work ethic: The reason<\/span>\u00a0monstera\u00a0<\/span>leaves have so many holes is because they\u2019re letting light in\u00a0<\/span>to help<\/span>\u00a0the leaves beneath them grow. It\u2019s an interesting way to think about the importance of supporting other up-and-coming artists as my business grows.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n Plants can be expensive, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t find deals! A lot of mine come from places that rent plants<\/a> to businesses. After a certain <\/span>amount<\/span> of rentals, they often sell them for next to nothing. Facebook marketplace is also an amazing resource: It\u2019s where I got a giant bird of paradise. When I do buy from boutiques, I research beforehand so I can support businesses I believe in.
